Treat persistent silence around a consequential issue as a leadership problem, not proof that the issue does not exist. Identify what people cannot safely discuss before trying to correct institutional deceit or cover-up.
When important concerns are undiscussable, founders receive distorted information and make decisions based on a false picture of the business. Creating a way to surface those concerns improves accountability and decision quality.
Ask your team anonymously: “What important issue do we avoid discussing, and what consequence makes it unsafe to raise?” Review the patterns and publicly address one recurring concern.
