When changing a long-standing free offering, treat monetization as a live experiment rather than waiting for a perfect plan. Real customer behavior will provide stronger evidence than abstract debate.
Why it matters
Introducing payment after years of free access tests both willingness to pay and the value customers assign to the offering. A deliberate experiment can improve pricing and packaging while limiting the cost of a wrong assumption.
Put it to work
Define one small subscription test: What will customers pay for, what behavior will indicate genuine demand, and what would make you revise or stop the experiment?
