A clear map cannot fix an incoherent business system. Before improving dashboards, process diagrams, or plans, test whether the underlying workflow and decisions make sense; otherwise, better navigation may only preserve unnecessary complexity.
Founders can mistake their own ability to operate inside a confusing system for evidence that the system works. That hides problems, increases dependence on insider knowledge, and makes execution harder to scale.
Choose one process you understand unusually well and ask: “If we ignored the current map, what is confusing, contradictory, or unnecessary about the underlying system—and what should we simplify first?”
