Treat support during serious illness as an organizational responsibility, not a test of an employee’s project-management ability. Give people a clear owner, simple steps and help coordinating benefits, leave and work handoffs.
Complex processes place the greatest burden on people when their time and capacity are already constrained. A humane, well-owned system protects employees while reducing confusion and disruption across the company.
Ask one employee to review your illness or emergency-leave process: Where must they coordinate multiple parties, interpret unclear rules or chase an answer? Assign an owner to remove the biggest burden.
