Before making a metric central to a decision, verify that it can actually be measured—even retrospectively. If it cannot, replace it with an observable proxy or explicitly treat it as an assumption rather than evidence.
Unmeasurable metrics can create false confidence while preventing teams from learning whether their choices worked. Clear measurement boundaries improve decision quality and accountability.
For each metric on your current dashboard, ask: “What specific data would let us calculate this after the outcome, and do we reliably capture it?” Flag any metric without a credible answer for replacement or reframing.
