A defensible platform is more than a collection of products: its advantage comes from the workflows, shared context, and dependencies created between them. Founders should design each product to deliver standalone value while making the combined system substantially harder to replace.
Competitors can match or replace individual features. A connected platform can create broader switching costs because customers must consider what they lose across the system—not merely whether one tool has a better substitute.
Map what customers would lose if they replaced one product today. Which valuable connection—such as a workflow, shared context, or cross-product dependency—could you strengthen without artificially locking customers in?
