Evaluate AI coding tools at the level of completed work, not licenses purchased or usage volume. Linking AI spend to individual Jira issues can improve cost attribution, but it does not by itself prove that the tool caused faster delivery or better outcomes.
Without a clear unit of analysis and a credible baseline, founders may mistake activity for ROI and keep funding tools that add cost without improving engineering performance.
Choose a recurring category of Jira issues and compare AI-assisted versus unassisted work on total cost, cycle time, rework, and quality. What evidence would justify renewing, expanding, or cancelling the tool?
