Define Your Market

Who are we choosing to serve, and why will they care?

Choose one market, ideal customer and value proposition before spending scarce resources on channels or campaigns.

Sprint output

A one-page market foundation: market, segment, ICP, customer progress, value proposition and positioning hypothesis.

Week 1 · Define Your Market

Watch the walkthrough, then use the sprint activities to build the work in your own company.

Build the system one decision at a time.

Complete the activities in order. Keep assumptions explicit and preserve the evidence that changes your view.

01
Choose the market
Create a clear field of play.
  1. List the markets the product could serve.
  2. Compare urgency, access, ability to pay and strategic fit.
  3. Choose one market for this sprint and state what you are not choosing.

Deliverable

One explicit market choice and stop list.

02
Define the ideal customer
Make the buyer concrete enough to guide evidence and messaging.
  1. Name the segment and buying context.
  2. Describe the trigger, stakes and current alternative.
  3. Record who decides, uses, influences and pays.

Deliverable

A usable ICP, not a broad demographic.

03
Map customer progress
Understand what the customer is trying to change.
  1. Describe the job, pains and desired gains.
  2. Document current workarounds and switching costs.
  3. Identify seeking signals visible in behaviour.

Deliverable

A customer-progress map grounded in evidence.

04
Form the value proposition
Connect product capability with meaningful customer value.
  1. State the problem in the customer's language.
  2. Describe the promised improvement.
  3. List the evidence required to make the promise credible.

Deliverable

A testable value proposition and positioning hypothesis.

Move on when the work can survive contact with reality.

Completion is based on usable outputs and evidence, not time spent consuming content.

One market is selected
The ICP is specific and accessible
Customer progress and alternatives are documented
The value proposition can be tested with a customer
